Thunder Man, Away!

catchphrase

Do you really think I would do housework unless I was forced?

Henry "Hank" Thunderman is a major character of The Thundermans. He used to be a superhero called "Thunder Man" back in Metroburg but he retired and moved to Hiddenville with his family to live a normal family. Hank is portrayed by Chris Tallman.

Hank is the father of Thunder Twins (Phoebe and Max Thunderman) as well as their younger siblings Billy, Nora and Chloe Thunderman. He is married to the retired superhero "Electress" Barb Thunderman.

Biography

Hank was born in Metroburg and later became the famous superhero known as "Thunder Man." He dated and married Barbara McBooger.

As a superhero, Hank stopped some of the worst supervillains including Green Ghoul and Dr. Colosso. However, Hank could never stop Evil Man, who also had Super Strength and Flight superpowers, just like Hank. Hank's sidekick was shot into space by the supervillain Dark Mayhem as revealed in Thundermans: Secret Revealed. As their hundredth save, also known as their thundredth save, Hank and Barb tracked down Professor Meteor and sent him to jail.

After a successful career as a superhero, Hank (and Barb) retired from being a superhero and moved the family to Hiddenville in order to live a normal life as they bring up their kids. However, he never fully left the superhero life behind. He uses every chance he's got to use his superpowers, especially his flight. He often flies through the ceiling using his catchphrase "Thunder Man, Away!!!" He still helps the Hero League when they need him. For example, in Haunted Thundermans, the Hero League asked him to come out of retirement and stop the Green Ghoul.

Hank never got a job in Hiddenville and therefore spends most of his time in the house. In Breaking Dad, he became Phoebe and Max's substitute teacher at Hiddenville High but couldn't continue because he didn't have a teaching license.

Hank has been helping Phoebe in superhero training. He had started training Phoebe in Thunder Van but realized that she wasn't ready. Phoebe chose him to be her official mentor in No Country for Old Mentors.

In Thundermans: Secret Revealed, Hank's powers were taken away by Max when Max was working with Dark Mayhem. After Max restored their powers, Hank got Barb's Electrokinesis but was fixed later, restoring their original powers.

During the 75th Annual Supe Awards in Come What Mayhem Hank and Barb received the Platinum Cape Lifetime Achievement Award for their superhero work. Hank reveals that he's saved the world 346 times.

In Thunder in Paradise, Hank has one of the biggest superheroes fights on-screen when he single-handedly takes down Destructo, Dark Mayhem's android sidekick, after a long battle in Hawaii.

In All the President's Thunder-Men, Hank is appointed by President Kickbutt to become the new Super President of the Hero League following her resignation. Unfortunately, in addition to being blackmailed by Dr. Colosso, Hank finds the duties of the Hero League to be too much for him to handle. Phoebe and Max convince Kickbutt to take back as the Super President, relieving Hank of his duties.

Personality

Hank is unwillingly retired and uses any opportunity he gets to use his powers, even if that's just flying to get his favorite sauce from another country. He tends to brag a lot, especially when telling his superhero stories. Like the rest of the Thundermans, he is very competitive and isn't afraid to compete against his kids as seen in multiple episodes.

Relationships

Family

Barb Thunderman

  • Barb Thunderman is the wife of Hank Thunderman. They are passionate towards each other and were partners in their superhero days. They also work together against their kids sometimes as well. However, they have been shown to be competitive with each other, as shown in Up, Up, and Vacay and Kiss Me Nate.

Max Thunderman

  • Max is Hank's oldest son. They interact sometimes and can get along with each other as well. They are both similar in that they are very laid-back, they can't resist junk food, love TV, and can be quite materialistic as well. However, Max thinks that Hank is lame. Hank has also implied that Max is his least favorite kid (likely because of his previous aspiration to be a supervillain), but that has changed since Max chose to be a superhero.
  • In Stealing Home, since Max was going through his evil phase, Hank was spending more time with Phoebe less than him which made Max feel skeptical and jealous.

Phoebe Thunderman

  • Phoebe is Hank's oldest daughter. They interact quite a lot and can get along quite well. Hank has been shown to train Phoebe a lot since she has been really determined to be a superhero since day one. Phoebe does think that Hank is lame, but she really looks up to him as well. Hank has been strict on her, particularly in her romantic life as well as her social life.

Billy Thunderman

  • Billy is Hank's youngest son. Hank has tried in the past to have the typical "father-son" relationship and has sometimes succeeded and sometimes failed. Billy thinks that Hank is lame, but he does really look up to him. They also are the only ones who know that Billy mailed Nora to Abu Dhabi right after she was born.
  • Hank wanted to hang out with Billy in You Stole My Thunder, Man by both of them collecting rocks.

Nora Thunderman

  • Nora is Hank's middle daughter. They hang around each other quite a lot and interact quite a lot as well. Hank is scared of Nora, as she often manipulates him to get what she wants. Nora thinks that Hank is lame, but she does look up to him a little bit.
  • Nora usually gets what she wants from her dad whilst doing her "cuteness" power because she was the youngest in the family but changed when Chloe was born, which was in A Hero Is Born. Even after Chloe was born, she manipulates her parents into doing anything as well like when she needed a playhouse in Kiss Me Nate

Chloe Thunderman

  • Chloe is Hank's youngest daughter. They interact quite a bit. Chloe and Hank have been seen to eat too much junk food in Aunt Misbehavin'. Unlike her siblings, Chloe doesn't really think that Hank is lame and thinks highly of him.

Friends

Mike Evilman

Main article: Hank and Mike
  • Mike and Hank were former friends and were arch enemies in Metroburg. They both freaked out when they found out the Evilman Family were both living a normal life in Hiddenville just like the Thunderman Family. Hank and Mike make up after Phoebe and Link's confrontation.

Powers and Abilities

  • Superhuman Strength: Hank has the power to lift and carry heavy objects with almost an incalculable amount of strength. With this, he can bend solid metal and smash cement blocks as if it were nothing. According to Barb, he has problems controlling it when he is emotional.
  • Supersonic Flight: He is able to fly faster than sound. The exact limit is unknown, although he can make it to Peru and back in a matter of minutes. Usually, when using this ability, he has to say "Thunder Man, away!" before taking off into the air. But, it is not necessary as he has used the ability without the catchphrase. He is usually seen flying out of the house through the ceiling and makes a big hole in the ceiling, which causes some plaster to fall.
    • Levitation: Along with being able to fly at supersonic speeds in the sky, he is capable of levitating himself. This ability appeared at the end of No Country for Old Mentors where he levitated and held Phoebe with him with aid of his super strength.
  • Thundersense: He has the ability to sense danger before it occurs. However, it is not always specific enough to tell what the danger is. He told Phoebe that he got his Thundersense when he was 12 years old, however, he only mentioned having the ability, not being able to show it.
  • Invulnerability: Hank has shown such a high level of durability that it at the level of an invulnerable state. He can smash through thick objects, such as the roof to the house, without damaging his body or experiencing any pain. In the episode You've Got Fail, he mentioned being able to fly into the sun but was still susceptible to poison ivy.
    • Aerial Adaptation: Hank has the power to adapt to the environment that he is around allowing him to further his flight abilities.
      • Atmospheric Adaptation: Hank can instantaneously adjust to any given atmospheric environment allowing him to travel in both cold and hot environments with ease.
      • Vacuum Adaptation: In,You Stole My Thunder, Man, he brought home a rock with the American flag from the moon that Neil Armstrong and Dr. Buzz Aldrin placed on July 29th, 1969.
      • Interstellar Travel: Hank has the power to travel across interstellar distances, mostly in space.

Abilities

  • Hand-to-Hand Combat: Hank is one of the worlds best superheroes. He battled many villains and monsters, always emerging as the victor but the only villain he could never stop was Evil Man who also had the same powers as him. Even without his regular powers he was able to shock Son of Scalestro with his wife's powers. He trained Phoebe and Max in hand-to-hand combat to where both twins are equal in combat. Even in retirement Hank was able to emerge as the victor against the robot Destructo or even take on multiple villains like King Crab, Lady Web, Scalestro, and multiple goons.

Power Swap

  • Electrokinesis: In Thundermans: Secret Revealed, Hank accidentally gets Electrokinesis but he gets his normal powers back in Thundermans: Banished!. When he had Barb's power Hank had trouble aiming and kept hitting Bradford every time. He also can't control where they come out. But Hank has shown that it can be reflected by certain objects like a pillar, which gets reflected and zaps Son of Scalestro.

Weaknesses

  • Thundertanium: In Blue Detective, he was unable to burst through the ceiling when Max lined it with thundertanium. A metal that he cannot seem to break. In Nowhere to SlideDr. Colosso traps Max, Billy, and Hank in Max's slide using Thundertanium so they can't escape. When Hank tried to break out the entire walls created a shock wave inside.
  • Poison Ivy: Despite his invulnerability, he can still get a rash from poison ivy.
  • Electrokinesis: Even though he is invulnerable, his body cannot stand large amounts of electricity as shown in Mall Time Crooks. In A Hero Is Born, he was knocked unconscious by Barb's large amount of electricity.
  • Achilles Comet: Like all superheroes, the Achilles Comet makes his powers go out of control.
  • Malvexium: Like all supers (Superheroes and Supervillains) it can destroy his power if he touches it.
